Date of Swadhyaya: 11/16/2008
Attendees:
Chapter No: 6
Sutra No: 8 and 9
Summary:
In today’s class we continued our discussion on ‘aashrav’. The influx of karma (or, karman particles) is aashrav. Aashrav has two dependencies: a) jiva, and b) aajiva.

First, we discussed gaatha eight which depicts the classification of jiva based aashrav.

Fundamental states of activity: Samrambh, Samarambh, and Aarambh
Yogs: Man, Vachan, Kaya
Executor: Krut, Karit, Anumodna
Kashay: Krodh, Maan, Maya, Lobh

Samrambh: to plan any sinful activity
Samarambh: to prepare for the sinful activity
Aarambh: to execute the sinful activity

Note: Above activities could be good activities as well – for example, planning to give donations, planning a pilgrimage, etc. The good activities will result into Punya Aashrav. In the text book, only bad activities are illustrated for good purposes.

Example (of samrambh, samarambh, and aarambh): Samyetsikhar Tirthyatra

Samrambh: to plan the tirthyatra
Samarambth: reserve train tickets, booking dharmashala rooms, etc.
Aarambh: to start from home to go to Samyetsikhar and come back.

Triyog: man, vachan, kaya

Krut: to self-execute self-interest good/bad activities
Karit: to have someone execute good/bad activities on one’s behalf.
Anumodna: to praise/support/advise/recommend others, when they are executing good/bad activities.

Kashay: Impure results of aatma. krodh, maan, maya, lobh are four impure states of aatma.

An Aashrav can be defined by a combination of one item from each of the four columns in the above table. For example, thinking about Samyetsikhar tirthyatra is an aashrav. In this example one’s mind does the samrambh with lobh kashay (here this is an example of prashast kashay). In total, there are (3*3*3*4=) 108 aashravs. However, this number increases to 432 when four types of kashays: aananthanubandhi, aapratyakhyani, pratyakhyani, and samjvalan are considered.

We also discussed the leshya, which is defined as combination of yog and kashay. There are six types of leshyas: shukla, padma, tejo, kapot, nil, and krushna (arranged by aati subh, to subh to aasubh to ati aasubh). They can be easily understood by a very popular jambun vruksh example. This example considers a hungry person, and a jumbun vruksh. One who eats aachet jumban fruits lying on the ground is in shukla (aati subh) leshya. One who cuts sachet jambun fruit from the tree is in padma leshya. One who cuts large number of sachet jambuns is in tejo leshya. One who cuts a small branch along with jambuns is in kapot leshya. One who cuts a large branch of the tree to satisfy the hunger is in nil leshya. One who cuts the tree from the roots to satisfy the hunger is in krushna (aati aasubh) leshya.

Next, we discussed the classification of aajiva based aashrav.

Nivartana: Mulgun-nivartana, Utargun-nivartana
Nikshep: Aapratyayvekshit-nikshap, Dupramrust-nikshap, Sahsa-nikshap, Anabhog-nikshap
Sayyog: Seet, Ushna
Nisarg: Mano-nisarg, Vaag-nisarg, Kay-nisarg

Nivartna: to create, or to design, or to manufacture
1) Mulgun-nivartna: to design sharir, vachan, man and swas-niswas. These are the fundamental things that we associate with jivas in sangni-panchendriya paryay.
2) Utargun-nivartna: to carve idols in tree, stone, etc. is utargun-nivartna. Even designing software, hardware, etc. is included in utargun-nivartna.

Nikshap: to put/move things around violently.
1) Aapratyayvekshit-nikshap: to put things without looking.
2) Dupramrust-nikshap: to carelessly put things
3) Sahsa-nikshap: to hastily or fearfully put things
4) Bhog-nikshap: to lye in places that are not clean and not carefully inspected

Sayyog: to mix different things, such as hot and cold.
To mix things or to mix pure and impure things is upkaran-sayyog. To mix sachet and aachit things together is bhaktpan-sayyog.

Nisarg: it is related to activities.
1) Mano-nisarg: mind’s activities with bad intentions.
2) Vaag-nisarg: speaking activities with bad intentions
3) Kay-nisarg: bodily activities with bad intentions

Thus, karma’s aashrav cannot occur without support of jiva and aajiva. Up to this point samanya aashrav is discussed. In later swadhyays we will discuss veshesh aashravs.

Class notes for 9th Nov, 2008

Date of Swadhyaya: 9th Nov, 2008
Attendees: Quite a few, didn't recognize everyone
Chapter No: 6
Sutra No:

Summary:

We started the class revising the categorization of Mohniya karma.

  • Darshan Mohniya - Samyaktva, Mithyatva, Mithyatva-Samyaktva
  • Charitra Mohniya - Krodh, Maan, Maya, Lobh kashaay, each of type Anantanubandhi, Apratyakhyan, Pratyakhyan and Sanjvalay and the 9 Nokashya (hasya, rati, arati, shok, bhay, jugupsa, strived, purushved, napunsakved).

We next reviewed a table presented in "Samyakgyan Chandrika" that summarizes "Kashay ke shakti sthan", "Leshya sthyan" and "Auyubandh sthan". "Samyakgyan Chandrika" is Pt. Todarlmalji's commentary of "Gommatsaar jeevkand" shastra that was written by the revered Acharya Pt. Nemichand Siddhantshastri of the 10th century.

Kashaay Shakti

"Kashaay shakti" has been categorized into 4 types:

  1. "Shilabhed saman" - Just like mending a crack in a rock is almost next to impossible, a kashay of this type is very difficult to overcome.
  2. "Pruthvibhed saman" - Here the kashaay shakti is compared to a crack formed in the earth (for eg, a stone).
  3. "Dhulirekha saman" - Here the kashaay shakti is compared to a line formed in sand.
  4. "Jalrekha saman" - Here the kashaay shakti is compared to a line formed in water. Such a line remains for hardly some time before it disappears. Similarly, a kashaay of this type is extremely weak and subsides quickly.

Leshya

We next talked about leshya. In simple words, leshya is formed out of combination of Yog and Kashaay. Kashay is the cause of Sthiti and Anubhag bandh, while Yog is the cause of Pradesh and Prakruti bandh.

Leshya is of 6 types. They are described below along with the characteristics of a jeev with that leshya.

  1. Krishna Leshya - Intensely cruel, never forgets enmity, doesn't obey/respect guru
  2. Neel Leshya - cheats others, avaricious, lethargic, braggart, wishes martyrdom
  3. Kapot Leshya - self-indulgent, craves for objects of the senses, hypocritical, lazy
  4. Peet Leshya - has the wisdom to understand what's worth doing and what's not, ndulges in acts of charity and sympathy
  5. Padma Leshya - worships and serves monks/guru, is calm, "tyaagi", endures "upsaargs" peacefully, and is at peace with others
  6. Shuklya Leshya - is impartial/objective, doesn't criticize others, mantains equanimity in face of favorable or unfavorable circumstances

Some facts about Leshya

  • In Manushya and Tiryanch, leshya keeps changing every "Antarmuhurat".
  • In Dev and Narki, it doesn't ever change for the entire duration of that life.

Leshya and Gunsthaan

  • 1-4th Gunsthaan - all 6 types of leshya can be found
  • 5-7th Gunsthaan - Peet, Padma and Shukla leshya can be found
  • 8-13th Gunsthaan - Only Shukla leshya is found

Leshya, Kashaay and Kashaay shakti

There is no relation between "Kashay shakti" and the type of Kashaay. For example, one can have Anantanubandhi kashay with Jalrekha type intensity and Shukla Leshya.

We also briefly discussed about what type of leshya is found in Naarkis and Dev. Naarkis only have Krushna leshya, while depending on the type of "Dev" and the level of "swarg", the leshya can vary.

Date of Swadhyaya: 1 Nov. 2008
Attendees: Mahavir, Ruchi, Pradeep, Paragji, Rajeevji and more
Chapter No: 6
Sutra No: 6-7
Summary:
Sampraik Aasrav is caused by 25 actions (kriya). Many of those were discussed in the earlier class. Sharavak's Shat aavasyak's help them reduce aasrav and bandh happen at the same instant of time.

  • Upguhan aanga of samyak darshan was also discussed at length. Upguhan is about – highlighting others virtues (guna), while hiding their's vices (dosh). For oneself, it's the other way i.e. expressing vices whereas hiding virtues. It was noted that its also important to provide right feedback to fellow jains but that should be in private and most important issue is purpose – the intention of providing the feedback.
  • Intensity of Aasrav is dependent on teevra bhaav, mandh bhaav, awareness of hurting others (gyat bhaav, agyat bhaav), adhikaran and virya.
  • Teevra Bhaav and Mand Bhaav depicts the intensity of feelings and higher the intensity higher the aasrav it results in. Hence one should always understand its feeling and control excessive behavior as much as possible. In addition, Teevra bhaav could be for good cause or for a bad cause; first brings Punya karma and later brings Paap karma. For example, doing Puja with Teevra bhaav versus cutting plants with Teevra bhaav.
  • Awareness of hurting others (gyat bhaav) results in higher aasrav.
  • Adhikaran : The supporting substance for aasrav is Adhikaran. It could be living person or a material. Also, here states of substances are considered. For instance, state of Jiv are like krodh/maan/maya/lobh etc.
  • Virya relates to the capability of Jiya. Higher the capability more the aasrav. A more capable powerful person may incur more aasrav than a less capable one for the same action.
