Class notes for 9th Nov, 2008

Date of Swadhyaya: 9th Nov, 2008
Attendees: Quite a few, didn't recognize everyone
Chapter No: 6
Sutra No:

Summary:

We started the class revising the categorization of Mohniya karma.

  • Darshan Mohniya - Samyaktva, Mithyatva, Mithyatva-Samyaktva
  • Charitra Mohniya - Krodh, Maan, Maya, Lobh kashaay, each of type Anantanubandhi, Apratyakhyan, Pratyakhyan and Sanjvalay and the 9 Nokashya (hasya, rati, arati, shok, bhay, jugupsa, strived, purushved, napunsakved).

We next reviewed a table presented in "Samyakgyan Chandrika" that summarizes "Kashay ke shakti sthan", "Leshya sthyan" and "Auyubandh sthan". "Samyakgyan Chandrika" is Pt. Todarlmalji's commentary of "Gommatsaar jeevkand" shastra that was written by the revered Acharya Pt. Nemichand Siddhantshastri of the 10th century.

Kashaay Shakti

"Kashaay shakti" has been categorized into 4 types:

  1. "Shilabhed saman" - Just like mending a crack in a rock is almost next to impossible, a kashay of this type is very difficult to overcome.
  2. "Pruthvibhed saman" - Here the kashaay shakti is compared to a crack formed in the earth (for eg, a stone).
  3. "Dhulirekha saman" - Here the kashaay shakti is compared to a line formed in sand.
  4. "Jalrekha saman" - Here the kashaay shakti is compared to a line formed in water. Such a line remains for hardly some time before it disappears. Similarly, a kashaay of this type is extremely weak and subsides quickly.

Leshya

We next talked about leshya. In simple words, leshya is formed out of combination of Yog and Kashaay. Kashay is the cause of Sthiti and Anubhag bandh, while Yog is the cause of Pradesh and Prakruti bandh.

Leshya is of 6 types. They are described below along with the characteristics of a jeev with that leshya.

  1. Krishna Leshya - Intensely cruel, never forgets enmity, doesn't obey/respect guru
  2. Neel Leshya - cheats others, avaricious, lethargic, braggart, wishes martyrdom
  3. Kapot Leshya - self-indulgent, craves for objects of the senses, hypocritical, lazy
  4. Peet Leshya - has the wisdom to understand what's worth doing and what's not, ndulges in acts of charity and sympathy
  5. Padma Leshya - worships and serves monks/guru, is calm, "tyaagi", endures "upsaargs" peacefully, and is at peace with others
  6. Shuklya Leshya - is impartial/objective, doesn't criticize others, mantains equanimity in face of favorable or unfavorable circumstances

Some facts about Leshya

  • In Manushya and Tiryanch, leshya keeps changing every "Antarmuhurat".
  • In Dev and Narki, it doesn't ever change for the entire duration of that life.

Leshya and Gunsthaan

  • 1-4th Gunsthaan - all 6 types of leshya can be found
  • 5-7th Gunsthaan - Peet, Padma and Shukla leshya can be found
  • 8-13th Gunsthaan - Only Shukla leshya is found

Leshya, Kashaay and Kashaay shakti

There is no relation between "Kashay shakti" and the type of Kashaay. For example, one can have Anantanubandhi kashay with Jalrekha type intensity and Shukla Leshya.

We also briefly discussed about what type of leshya is found in Naarkis and Dev. Naarkis only have Krushna leshya, while depending on the type of "Dev" and the level of "swarg", the leshya can vary.
